About Listening To God Through Scripture/ Group Spiritual Direction
Listening To God Through Scripture is a process in which people come together on a monthly basis to do some “deep listening” of a passage from scripture. The scripture is read three times and participants are asked after each reading about questions such as: What word or phrase resonates with me the most? Why? What feelings come up for me? What does it have to do with me, my life, or the life of my community? Is there an invitation for me from this scripture or a question for God? The shared purpose of this process is to increase self-discovery of God’s presence and action in our lives through God’s word.
Three conditions are essential in the life of the group. Members must agree 1) to commit themselves to an honest relationship with God, 2) to participate wholeheartedly in the group process through prayerful listening and response, and 3) to open their spiritual journeys for consideration by others.
Group spiritual direction demands a level of trust not often found in other types of groups. This trust is not dependent upon similar personalities, mutual interests or common experiences, rather, it is grounded in a trust of God’s desire for each participant individually as well as the group as a whole.
Our groups meet once a month and usually for nine months. They vary in size from three to six people with an experienced group direction leader. Our meeting times vary.
